Choice
At the E.L.A. Cafe, choice is always on the menu. Students are invited to design their own learning experiences and are afforded the freedoms of adult learners, whenever possible. Our facilitative workshop approach allows students the autonomy to explore reading and writing in relevant, meaningful ways. Enjoy this video of our learning in action.

Technology Integration and Collaboration
Our students are digital natives. The MacBook Airs, iPads and iPod Touch available at The E.L.A. Cafe play an integral role in our collaborative literacy stations and inquiry-based projects throughout the year. Additionally, digital platforms like Google Docs, Kidblog, and Edmodo provide our diverse learners with authentic audiences and purposes for learning.

"Students should experience success and failure not as reward and punishment, but as information."
- Jerome Bruner
Safe, Nurturing, Inclusive and Flexible Learning Environment
The Cafe has a diverse, collaborative culture which ensures varied perspectives and rich, social interactions to deepen students’ connections to literature and to the world around them. Personalized feedback and multiple opportunities to share, improve, and demonstrate mastery is a dignified way for students to gain confidence as life-long readers and writers.
Additionally, the Cafe's open layout and alternative seating is tailored for the physical and social needs of adolescent learners. Movement and communication are not hindered by traditional, restrictive furniture. Instead, bean bags, bungee chairs, exercise balls, and gaming chairs support the varied learning styles and energy levels of our learners.

"Middle school teachers make the best of our students when we accept and build on the realities of middle school kids. We can't wish away, discipline away, or program away a time of life. We're there to help our students open a window on adulthood, on what really matters in life; we help by opening our curricula to young adolescents' preoccupations, perspectives and growing pains." - Nancie Atwell
