It takes a village to keep the Cafe clean. Luckily, I have no problems finding help before or after school. Needless to say, the kids appreciate what we have and want to keep it that way. They do sometimes bicker over who gets to run the vacuum though.

There is no sign of author Jeff Kinney slowing down any time soon. His latest book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck was released November 5th. I have to admit, it is hysterical! I never would have read it if it weren't for the boys in my 1st period. I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but they're just a little bit excited about these books!
I am incredibly proud of my students who were brave, insightful, and genuine during our presentation at the Board Workshop this evening. Laura, Gisselle, Stuart, and Camrun: YOU are exactly why teaching is the best job in the world! Thank you for representing Hedrick Middle School so beautifully!
We are so grateful for our guest author, Elise Nichols, who was so candid and generous in sharing her experiences as a fantasy fiction writer. She gave us a behind the scenes look at her very own writer's notebook and we even got a sneak peek at the book cover for her third book, Dark Throne, which will be published later this year or early 2014. We also received a classroom copy of her first two books, True Sovereign and Equal Power. Her books appeal to both young adults and adults and are available from Amazon in paperback and for Kindle. Check them out! On October 17th, author Elise Nichols will come to talk to us about her writing life. She writes young adult fantasy fiction. Her books are: True Sovereign and Equal Power. And, she wrote her first book in sixth grade! I mean, how relevant will that be to our class? It's going to be an all-around authentic learning experience. Can't wait!
This week we spiced up our Cornell Notes (a/k/a C-Notes) with the help of 'Mr. Stick'. I found this concept on Corbett Harrison's Always Write website. The rationale is quite compelling and the kids love it. I think they feel safe expressing what they understand, or don't understand, because it's coming from Mr. Stick and not them. I think this is especially beneficial for our ELL's.
A picture is worth a thousand words (or two thousand, two hundred and sixty-three dollars!)9/7/2013 In its opening week, The E.L.A. Cafe received great reviews. Our patrons are so excited to learn in this environment!
1. I believe in you.
2. I trust you. 3. I am proud of you. 4. We are gifts to each other. 5. We are a family. 6. You are listened to. 7. You are cared for. 8. You are talented, original and have important things to say. 9. You are enough. 10. You will succeed. Love, Mrs. McCloud Now, all I need are my customers! I can't wait to work with them. Thank you to my campus leadership, fellow teachers, friends, family, and anyone who moved a piece of furniture, painted a wall, cleaned a floor, installed technology, or donated furniture. It's going to be a great year. Stay tuned! The floors are in! The finish is being put on this week. Cannot wait to get in there and set up the cafe! And check out the swanky futon and rug we'll be hanging out on!
